By now you have probably heard of, or at least seen pictures of the seven massive stacks of neon boulders just outside of Las Vegas. The art installation aptly named Seven Magic Mountains has attracted thousands of travelers since its opening in 2016. Like any popular photo spot, travelers have since begun to wonder if the attraction is actually worth all the hype. Well, I’m here to tell you that it absolutely is!
Give Your Trip a Deeper Meaning
No matter which direction you come from, a road trip to Las Vegas brings you through some of the most uninhabitable and raw landscapes in North America. The Seven Magic Mountains almost act as a gateway to Las Vegas, a sort of preview for what is to come just 10 miles down the road. The vast desert wilderness is interrupted by the unnaturally stacked rocks and bright neon colors. However, the “locally sourced” boulders keep the artwork connected to nature. These bright 30-foot tall totems act as a mediator and mild transition between the soft desert wilderness and the infamously electric city just beyond.

It’s Completely Free
Although this colorful creation cost $3.5 million to commission and install, it is completely free to the public. The exhibit is on public land and is open from sunrise to sunset. Don’t expect many amenities as there is no visitor center, ticket office, or bathrooms. And contrary to many of the other free things to do in Las Vegas, even the parking here is free. If you don’t have a car, Uber or Lyft is the next cheapest option for visiting. But if you are looking for a longer adventure, combine a visit to the Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, and the Welcome to Las Vegas sign for just $169 with MaxTour. When I did their day tour we were the first ones at both the Welcome to Las Vegas sign and the Seven Magic Mountains so we had the attractions completely to ourselves!

Getting There is Gorgeous
In order to beat the crowds, you will have to arrive early. Although it is only 10 miles outside of the city, this art installation feels very remote. You have to drive a few miles on the old Las Vegas Boulevard to get to the parking lot from the interstate. However, the beautiful sunrise desert drive alone makes the Seven Magic Mountains well worth the visit. Lastly, make sure you plan your visit before it’s gone! The art installation was initially only scheduled to be on view for two years. A permit recently extended its stay until the end of 2021.

Hi, Cassie. The “service road” you refer to is actually Las Vegas Blvd. The same one that runs all the way through Las Vegas and beyond.
Cassie
Thank you for that info! I updated my post.
