Everyone knows that the giant sequoias are one of California’s greatest wonders. I fell in love with the big trees on my first visit to Sequoia National Park. However, I recently discovered a less crowded, completely free, and easy-to-access grove. If you are looking for a simpler adventure, then this is the best place to see the sequoias!
The McKinley Grove
I always thought that the giant sequoias made up one big forest in Sequoia National Park. There are actually several groves of giant sequoias spread throughout the Sierra Nevadas, with the largest concentration being in the national park.

Located just an hour and a half from Fresno, the McKinley Grove is a small pocket of sequoias that is incredibly accessible by car. In fact, the main road takes you directly to the grove where there is a small pullout parking area next to a bathroom. Because it is almost directly at the midpoint between Yosemite and Sequoia, the McKinley Grove is far less crowded than either national park. This also means that there is no entrance or parking fee required.
While You Are There
I was a little skeptical about how this grove would compare to how stunning Sequoia National Park is. Understand that the McKinley Grove is a smaller, more mild version of the national park. I say this because the giant sequoia tree concentration within the grove is significantly less, and the walking trail area around the actual sequoias is smaller as well.
However, the McKinley Grove is still a great option to experience the giant trees. As you are driving there, you can immediately tell when you found the grove. The biggest sequoias line the main road and you can see a stark contrast from the small mountain trees against the wide sequoias. The walking path between the trees is right next to the main road parking making the McKinley Grove incredibly accessible.
Before You Go
Be sure to pack a lunch and plan to picnic at the grove. (As always, be mindful to take out whatever trash you take in.) Just on the other side of the road from the parking area are several picnic tables with a great view of the giant sequoias. Check out my shop page for my favorite mild hiking accessories.
The size and location of the McKinley Grove made for a perfect morning of driving there, walking the stunning paths between the trees, and enjoying lunch with a great view.

Have you seen these giant trees? Where is the best place to see the sequoias for you?

I loved reading your posts, which I just discovered today. Do you know if the McKinly Grove is open? It seems like it might be closed but then I saw something about trails being opened. Aug. 5, 2020

Hi Pat, thank you for following along! I believe McKinley Grove is open as it is not within a state park, it’s pretty much a turnout spot on the road just past Shaver Lake!
