A First-Timers Guide to Seattle

Seattle is overflowing with some of the world’s most Instagrammable art and picturesque wilderness. This combination certainly did not disappoint! I fell in love with this city and discovered that one weekend in Seattle is truly too short. However, if you are limited to only one weekend on your first visit, here are my top recommendations to get to know the city.

Things to do in Downtown Seattle

Pike Place Market

Many of Seattle’s most iconic spots are all within a convenient walking distance downtown. Of course one of the first places I visited was Pike Place Market. From fisherman hurdling their catch across stalls, to gorgeous giant flower bouquets and delicious food with a waterfront view, Pike Place most definitely requires more than one visit. Be sure to check out the Pike Place Market webpage for a full listing of vendors and events so you don’t miss out on your first trip.

And don’t forget to feed Rachel a few coins and rub her snout. Rumor has it she brings good luck!

Post Alley

Just next to the flying fish is a staircase that leads to Post Alley, home of the infamous gum wall. I personally didn’t contribute to the monument, but I quickly learned that if you want the cliche picture you should purchase bubble gum beforehand.

Original Starbucks

If you are at Pike Place market you might as well cross the street to the original Starbucks. Don’t expect an antique experience, but the coffee cup makes a great handwarmer and photo prop.

Seattle Aquarium

Also within walking distance is the Seattle Aquarium. Because it is right on the waterfront, half of the exhibits are outside. This was a fun way to learn and get a close-up view of some rehabilitated wildlife I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to see.

Fremont Troll

My favorite public art in Seattle is the Fremont Troll. Due to his infamy, there will probably be a line to get a picture with the giant. I found the wait well worth it as Fremont is a fun area with many hidden gems to explore. If you explore the area close enough, you might even find the Three Billy Goats Gruff on their way to meet the troll under the architecturally stunning Fremont Bridge.

Chihuly Museum

If you prefer modern art, the largest collection of Chihuly blown glass is worth checking out. Located at the foot of the Space Needle, it is one of the easiest items to check off any Seattle bucket list.

Seattle Great Wheel

Just across from the aquarium is the Seattle Great Wheel. If you recall my favorite things to do in Oklahoma City, you know I cannot resist a scenic Ferris wheel! The Great Wheel line was short and the carriage was enclosed making for a great ride.

Seattle Space Needle

I would be remiss not to mention the most well-known observation tower in the world when talking about great views. However, I opted for a view of the tower instead of paying for the view from it.

West Seattle

Besides, going up is not the only way to get an amazing view. Take a drive to the shore of West Seattle for an incredible view of the downtown skyline and Elliott Bay. A stop at Marination Ma Kai is delicious and well worth it!

Best Hikes Near Seattle

Discovery Park

A very mild and easy-to-access hike is Discovery Park. On the very tip of the isthmus is West Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse was a fun backdrop and a great reward at the end of our rainy walk.

Poo Poo Point

A more moderate hike with an equally fun reward lies just thirty minutes southeast of Seattle. Chirico Trail is in the Tiger Mountain State Forest in Issaquah, Washington. It leads to Poo Poo Point, a grassy knoll on the mountaintop. Poo Poo Point is more than just an incredible view of Mt. Rainier in the distance, it is also a prime takeoff spot for paragliders. I had a great lunch taking in the scenery and watching people jump off the mountain just feet from where I sat.
