Prayer for safe travel is paramount to my pre-trip routine, especially in light of the coronavirus. There is no question that the global pandemic has completely rocked the travel industry. What used to be routine is now wholly unknown and wrapped in worry. However, God has been and will continue to be the one constant through it all. These prayers are specifically relevant to travelers in the wake of the coronavirus.

Pray for Health and Safety

Start with the basics, start with God. In times of stress and anxiety, we can lean into God’s promises even more. Remember that God is our healer and protector. Pray for safe travel, and pray against the spread of the virus.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1

Pray for the Unseen and Vulnerable

In Jeremiah 29, God instructed the exiles to pray for Babylon where they were held captive. While we are not bound in the same captivity, we can still follow Jeremiah’s example by seeking the welfare of the city. Pray for all the locals, from the marginalized who are normally hidden from visitors to those whose health is most at-risk. This verse reminds me to be more sensitive to the needs around me.

But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.

Pray for Front Line Workers

As a traveler, I don’t often get to know many of the people that I interact with on a trip. By nature, my visits are short and transactional, especially in transit. Pray for everyone on the front lines of the travel industry from the flight attendants, Uber drivers, and receptionists, to those who depend on tourism and host visitors regularly.

Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.

James 5:13

Pray Against Biases and Racism

An unfortunate side effect of this virus is the misinformation and fear that accompany it. As humans, this is also when we are most vulnerable to our sin nature as we lash out in fear and confusion. Pray against biases, discrimination, and racism that have stemmed from this pandemic. Ask God to uncover any areas in yourself that you may not realize need correction. Pray to see God in others and to have patience and grace with anyone you encounter. Ask God to move your heart to align with His, and to be a light amidst this uncertainty.

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

Psalm 139: 23-24

Pray for Yourself

Travelers are now having to balance making informed decisions without allowing fear to take control. Pray for wisdom in all decision making and pray that God would be glorified through it all. This verse reminds me that as long as we are rooted in Christ, no matter what circumstance surrounds us, we don’t have to be anxious about anything.

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.

Jeremiah 17:7-8
