From the bustling city of Istanbul to the ancient ruins of Ephesus, Turkey is a fascinating country full of natural and historical beauty.

But is Turkey safe for Christian tourists?

The answer is yes. Though Turkey is 99% Muslim and Christianity is not widespread, Christian travelers are still welcome in Turkey. In fact, many of Turkey’s largest tourist attractions have religious significance for Christians.

While Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country, with the proper preparation and knowledge, any traveler can safely explore what Turkey has to offer.

As a practicing Christian, I felt safe walking the streets of Istanbul and exploring the city without a guide. In this post, I’ll break down why Turkey is still a great place to visit for Christian travelers, plus the basic precautions Christian tourists should take.

Is Christianity allowed in Turkey?

The short answer is yes, Christianity is allowed in Turkey. While Turkey is a majority Muslim country, religious freedom is protected.

Visiting Turkey as a Christian tourist will not limit your itinerary or the things you can do. Many of the major tourist attractions have religious significance for Christians. Plus, you will see many Christian tour groups throughout the country.

While Christianity is technically allowed, it is not widely practiced or accepted by locals. There is a big difference between how Christian tourists are treated versus how Christians who live in Turkey are treated.

How are Christians and other non-Muslims treated in Turkey?

As long as mutual respect is given, for the most part, Christian tourists are treated no differently than any other visitor to Turkey.

Despite being one of the safest countries in Europe for travelers from all backgrounds, there are still certain safety tips that everyone should keep in mind when visiting Turkey as a Christian tourist.

Comment sense goes a long way. Dress modestly, be aware of your surroundings at all times, and respect other religions’ customs. This includes women covering their hair and shoulders in mosques.

It’s also important to note that the most visited and touristy areas are the safest. If you plan on leaving those areas, do extensive research beforehand so that you know what risks you may be taking by traveling there.

I traveled extensively around Istanbul. Apart from covering my hair and shoulders when visiting mosques, I did not change or modify my behavior. I was treated the same as any other western-looking tourist.

Most of the Christian persecution in Turkey is experienced by locals. Visitors will not see or feel persecution unless you are traveling closely with a missionary or converted local.

Is it safe for Christians to travel in Istanbul?

Just like any other destination, it’s important to stay informed about what’s going on in order to ensure your safety and security while traveling.

Fortunately, most cities frequented by tourists are generally safe from conflict or political unrest. And Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, as well as an international and maritime hub.

Istanbul also straddles two continents, Europe and Asia, so it is a melting pot of many cultures. Because it is such a popular destination, western culture is much more accepted here as well.

This means that Istanbul is one of the safest places for Christians to visit in Turkey.

Overall, common sense goes a long way in respecting the different religions and customs while visiting this beautiful country.
