The Darling Hotel is hands down the most romantic getaway in Central California. Nestled in the heart of downtown Visalia, this tastefully restored 1930s courthouse transports you back in time with its Art Deco design. Overlooking the nearby Sierra Nevadas, a day trip to Sequoia National Park is at your fingertips. But you might find entertainment in simply strolling its halls and appreciating the beauty in its most unexpected details. The Darling Hotel is one of the few boutique hotels in the Central Valley and the closest boutique hotel to Fresno. What really makes this the most romantic getaway in Central California is the opportunity to escape together right in the heart of our beautiful state.

There are three key elements that come to mind when I picture a romantic getaway. I envision a cozy room with space to luxuriate, the option to get outside and escape in nature together, and the ability to glam up and splurge on a date night. I found all of this and more at The Darling Hotel in Visalia. Once I stepped into its stunning common areas, I knew we had to spend an entire night in! Plus, having a speakeasy restaurant and lounge right on the rooftop was the ultimate bonus.

The Most Romantic Hotel in Central California

Prepare to step back in time as you enter the lobby. The courthouse’s distinct design and many original details, including doors, crown molding, lighting sconces, and even original window hardware, have been carried through the restoration. You will find a nod to 1930s glamour everywhere- think luscious velvet fabrics and gold art deco accents. But The Darling Hotel is more than a tribute to the ’30s. Each room and mezzanine nook is curated to highlight the rich history of Central California. I especially loved the local botanicals featured in the artwork. The Golden Poppies really popped against the restored historical pieces and other rich textures.

When you get to your room, beware that you will never want to leave. The natural light from the tall, ceiling length windows makes the room feel extra spacious. Of course, I also loved the modern touches like the flat-screen TV and adjustable mood lighting chandelier. But perhaps my favorite feature of all was the giant white marble bathroom with gold fixtures. Our room had a spacious double faucet rain shower, but book one of the suites, and you will get a lovely clawfoot bathtub.

The Best Hotel Near Sequoia National Park

Part of what makes The Darling Hotel the most romantic getaway in Central California is its proximity to Sequoia National Park. One of my favorite dates is a beautiful hike, and The Darling Hotel is only 45 minutes from a hike through the largest trees in the world. Another perk about The Darling Hotel is that it is only a five-minute walk to the Sequoia Shuttle stop. (When it resumes service post COVID.) Day parking in Sequoia National Park can be a nightmare, and for $20 per person, taking the shuttle can spare you the headache. If you drive yourself, the entry fee is $35 per vehicle.

However you get there, you will want to take the in-park shuttle from the Giant Forest Museum to the different stops throughout the park. Make the most of a day trip there by shuttling to the additional interest points. Walking is another excellent option, although you won’t be able to see as many stops. My favorite points of interest are Moro Rock, Tunnel Log, and of course, General Sherman. For even more details, check out my post on five things you shouldn’t miss in Sequoia National Park.

Central California’s Most Romantic Dinner Date

The final element to a romantic getaway is a splurge on a dinner date. Elderwood is The Darling Hotel’s rooftop restaurant and lounge. Due to COVID restrictions, we did not get to enjoy the interior. But walking past it, I could tell the 1930s glamor certainly made its way to the rooftop, and I cannot wait to return for the full experience. Elderwood is the perfect excuse to get a little dressed up for each other. You could even theme your date inspired by the flapper or Old Hollywood style. Outdoors we were treated to a view of downtown Visalia and the Sierra Nevadas. The menu changes seasonally, but try the Pan Seared Scallop Butternut Squash Rissoto with Candied Lemon if you get the chance. I also loved the Elderwood Staff Original Spiced Pear Mule featuring ginger beer, Four Roses bourbon, spiced pear liqueur, maple, and lime.

The Darling Hotel truly is the most romantic getaway in Central California. Luxuriate at the art deco hotel, hike the iconic sequoias, and splurge on a rooftop dinner in a gorgeous and historic setting- where else can you find all the elements of the perfect romantic retreat?
