When I first saw Big Pine Lakes on Instagram I added it to my bucket list immediately. I had no idea that California was home to beautiful turquoise lakes like the ones you find in Canada. I was even more pleasantly surprised to find that the Big Pine Lakes trailhead was so accessible, just a three-hour drive from the closest major city of Bakersfield. The hike itself was another story, but the stunning view at the end was completely worth it. Here are eight photos that will inspire you to hike Big Pine Lakes in California.

AllTrails is my go-to for hiking directions where I found this hiking map. From the trailhead, follow the North Fork signage.

The hike up was very intense, not because of any technical obstacles or skill needed, but because of the sheer distance and elevation gain. There was very little shade and the first few miles uphill were gravelly so it added even more intensity.

My biggest regret is that I did not bring enough water. It would be very difficult to start the hike lugging all the water you need, so if I did this hike again I would bring a water filter or straw so I could replenish along the way. After the first mile you are almost constantly next to the glacial runoff so there are plenty of spots to refill.

Out of the seven lakes on the trail, Lake One and Lake Two are the most popular with reportedly the best views. I did not want to add any more mileage to my day so I stopped at Lake Two. If you do make it to Lake One, definitely check out Lake Two just a five-minute walk away. The rest of the lakes take a bit longer to get to.

Next time I go I will also try and get a permit to camp here. (Day hikes do not require a permit.) If I stayed longer it would also have made it easier to check out more of the lakes.
